Hair without volume is usually the main complaint of those with fine hair. This is because this type of hair tends to be dull and shapeless, in addition to giving work to those who want to bet on a more elaborate hairstyle for a party or special event.
The good news is that, with some simple routine care, it is possible to add volume to the hair. To help with the mission, hairdresser Carla Gonçalves, hairdresser at the LeFil Beauty salon, in São Paulo (SP), teaches the way of stones. Check out!
1. Choose the right shampoo
Not using the right product for fine hair is one of the most damaging factors for your hair. If your client has thin hair and uses heavy products, they tend to have less volume. "Therefore, avoid shampoos that contain silicones, as these favor the appearance of fat and oiliness, and prefer neutral ones, specific to fine hair or specially formulated to give volume", explains Carla.
2. Opt for a light conditioner
Conditioners and moisturizing masks can be even worse than shampoos for fine hair, as they are more likely to leave heavy strands. So avoid products that are labeled as “richly moisturizing” or “straighteners”, as they contain oils that will weigh on the strands, causing them to lose volume. “Just like shampoos, avoid silicone-containing conditioners and prefer those specially formulated for fine hair”, explains the Lefil Beauty professional.
3. Apply a leave-in after washing
After washing your hair, the ideal is to use a specific leave-in for fine hair. To do this, remove moisture from the hair and apply the product from the length of the strands to the ends. “The leave-in will help to add volume to the hair, especially for those who have curly hair, as it also helps to form the curl. But be careful not to overdo the use of the product, because, in addition to leaving the hair with an oily appearance, the product will make the strands heavy and, consequently, without volume ”, points out Carla.
4. Wash your hair every other day
As they are more oily, the ideal is to guide your client to wash her hair every other day, using neutral shampoo and dispensing with the conditioner, since the leave-in used after the bath will be enough to hydrate the hair the way it needs to , but without making it heavy. “However, if the hair becomes tangled easily, there is no way to dispense with the conditioner. In this case, apply it only on the length of the wire, preserving the root. ”
5. Use an anti-residue shampoo
The build-up of products can weigh the hair and make it look straight and lifeless. Therefore, once a week it is important that your client makes use of a good anti-residue shampoo, since the product performs a deep cleaning on the threads, removing residues of hair creams, pollution and oil and leaving the threads totally clean. "But it is essential that she uses this type of shampoo only once a week or when necessary since its constant and excess use removes important proteins for the hair", warns the expert.
6. Watch your water temperature
The hot water removes the oil, but also makes the scalp produce more oil, making the hair heavy. In addition, washing the hair with hot water dilates the hair fiber and causes the hair to lose water and frizz, which, in the long run, can leave the hair fragile and dry. "The ideal then is to use warm water and to do one last rinse with cold water, to close the cuticles of the hair."
7. Dry the wires properly
For those who have thin and curly hair, the ideal is to dry with the towel, starting at the root and going to the ends, since the dryer can remove the natural volume of the curls. However, if your client prefers the dryer, the logic is the same. “Start at the root and finish by drying the ends, but avoid using brushes, as traction makes hair more oily and heavy. Be careful not to use the dryer too hot to avoid damaging the wires. In addition, remember to always remove excess moisture with a towel before using the dryer ”, comments Carla Gonçalves. “If you want to add extra volume, one tip is to dry the hair with the head tilted down or in the opposite direction to which she is used to combing her hair. When finished, your client will notice an immediate volume on the wires. ”
8. Attention when combing
The first care is in relation to the choice of the brush. Always prefer Best Brushes for Fine Hair with natural bristles and wooden combs, as they cause less traction on the strands and separate larger strands of hair, helping to add volume to the strands. To fix the hairstyle stay away from finishers with strong fixation and very pasty, as they will make hair heavy and without volume. “Instead, opt for male ointments, which are generally milder, powdered ointments, which help to reduce root oil and make hair lighter, fixative sprays or mousses. Regardless of which one you use, the ideal is to apply only near the root so as not to weigh the ends. But be careful with exaggerations, since the more products in the threads, the heavier they will become ”, highlights the hairdresser.
9. Bet on curly and wavy hair
Curls are the best and fastest option to add volume to straight hair. To do this, use velcro bobs on the front of the hair or use a babyliss to curl parts of the hair and splash a little bit of a fastener to keep it in place. Even if the curls disappear during the day, the extra texture and volume and movement in the hair will remain. “But if your client is not a fan of curls, use a flat iron to create a slight curl at the ends of the hair. In addition to the feeling of movement, the technique will give a more voluminous and thicker appearance to your hair.10. Regular haircuts
If your client has very fine hair without volume, the ideal is not to leave it too long, as this will make them heavy. The recommended then is to cut them frequently, preferably always at shoulder height, to keep the strands structured. “A good tip is to cut in layers, as they give your hair an instant texture. Another option is to add colors to the wires. One or two subtle tones are already capable of giving a voluminous appearance to the hair ”, concludes Carla Gonçalves.
